KPMG report suggests positive outlook for construction and underlines the importance of recruiting to help deliver growth

According to a new report published by global advisory firm KPMG, in the UK construction industry a number of companies are reporting increased order books, pipeline and profit margins. These market improvements mean that many firms are now looking for ways to expand their business - whether that means by recruiting, adding new locations or branching out into new sectors.

The new report, entitled Global Construction 2013: Ready for the Next Big Wave? provides the results of a survey with questions directed at 165 senior leaders from engineering and construction companies in 29 countries.

The research shows that 73 per cent of companies in the UK have either a 'positive' or 'very positive' outlook on for business prospects over the next two to five years. In other regions, like the Americas and Asia-Pacific, the numbers were even higher.

Commenting on the report's findings, Richard Threlfall, the UK head of infrastructure, building and construction at KPMG, said that over the last few months, companies have become more optimistic and are beginning to believe that the worst of the economic crisis is behind us.

57 per cent of those surveyed believe that their companies would grow between one and 25 per cent this year, compared to 2012 - and the outlook is even more positive in the Americas, where 80 per cent of companies expect a similar level of growth.

"Construction companies now need to invest in growth. What is holding back the industry now is not lack of demand, but the ability of businesses to resource for it and recruit sufficient experienced staff," Mr Threlfall explained. This could certainly be good news for contractors who work in the construction industry.

He also indicated that construction firms must respond quickly to the increase in demand if they want to remain competitive: "Companies need to act now, because the industry's resurgence is already underway."

According to the survey, respondents believe there are a number of drivers for growth that will continue to affect the sector. More than half (53 per cent) of those questioned in the UK think that government infrastructure plans, global economic growth and urbanisation are to thank for the improvements.

If you are a manufacturer of construction products looking to recruit, please view our website at www.pinnacelconsulting.co.uk or call us on 01480 405225 to discuss your requirements.

CPA revise their forecast for UK construction industry...and the only way is up!

Great news for the whole construction industry, and especially manufacturers and distributors of building materials and construction products, as the The Construction Products Association is now anticipating growth of 19.0% for the £111 billion industry by 2017.

This revision from the summer, reflects an increase in activity, which will boost UK GDP by an additional £20 billion. As a result of this increase in activity, the forecast has been upwardly revised, with growth now estimated at 19% by 2017. In 2014, construction output is expected to increase by 2.7%, before rising by 4.6% in 2015.

Noble Francis, Economics Director of the Construction Products Association, commented: “Construction is set to enjoy growth over the next four years as it recovers from its worst recession in over 35 years.  This is mainly due to private housing, which is experiencing a rapid rise, and infrastructure, which is seeing a more gradual return to positive territory.

“The private housing sector is being driven by recovery in the wider economy and the impacts of policies including Help to Buy, which have driven both house prices and house building.  This is expected to lead to private house starts increasing 19.0% in 2013 and 15.0% in 2014, albeit from historic low levels of house building.

“Although rapid growth is predicted over the next 18 months, uncertainty remains around what will happen when the policies end, given that the housing market is unlikely to be self-sustaining by then.

“The infrastructure sector is recovering from a very difficult 2012, when output fell 12.7% despite numerous government announcements of ‘boosts’ to the sector.  Government now appears, however, to be refocusing capital investment towards repairs and renewals.  In addition, work on Europe’s largest construction project, Crossrail, is expected to peak over the next 18 months.  As a result, growth of 7.4% is forecast in 2014.

“In the longer-term, the prospects for infrastructure will be reliant upon investment in the replacement of energy capacity across nuclear, offshore wind, gas and shale, all of which remain uncertain.  Driven by this investment, we predict the sector will enjoy further growth of 27.9% between 2015 and 2017.

“Two other sectors figure prominently in our forecasts,” Mr. Francis continued.  “First, work in the largest sector of commercial (offices and retail) remains one-third lower than its high in 2007.  Second, public sector construction, which accounts for one-third of total industry output, continues to constrain overall growth.”

He concluded:  “After suffering from an extremely tough market for over five years, and acting as a drag on UK economic activity, construction is set to grow every year between 2014 and 2017.  This should provide a considerable boost to the wider economy.”

Key points in the Forecasts include:

• Construction output growth of 2.7% in 2014 and 4.6% in 2015

• Private housing starts to rise 19.0% in 2013 and 15.0% in 2014

• Public education to fall 14.0% this year

• Rail infrastructure to rise 34.0% by 2017

• Energy infrastructure to rise 99.0% by 2017

• Public sector education and health projects to fall 11.0% in 2013 and 2.4% in 2014

We are recruiting...a career in construction sales recruitment

If you are thinking of changing your career, then recruitment is definitely worth considering. It is a career that many overlook, but it is exciting, challenging and interesting, as well as personally and financially rewarding.

We are currently recruiting...find out more here

It is a major industry sector
The recruitment industry has an annual UK turnover of over £20 billion and employs almost 100,000 people, therefore contributes significantly to the UK economy. However, its real value is actually much more...

Help shape the economy of the UK
A recruitment agency helps shape the future of the whole economy by providing a range of professional services to people and companies across many job functions and industry sectors.

Your aim as a recruitment consultant is to successfully guide individuals through their career and assist companies to add real value to their business. In summary, your placements help to deliver a successful UK economy by enabling other sectors to generate income, through the right people being placed in the right roles to allow companies to benefit.

Become a unique talent scout in a diverse and challenging environment
The job is arguably one of the most diverse within the business world. It is fast paced, exciting, competitive, challenging and very rewarding. Your role is that of a talent scout, trying to identify and uncover qualities and potential in people to flourish in the right environment.

Help enhance peoples’ lives and companies to grow
A recruitment consultant comes with a high degree of responsibility as you directly influence futures - you have the opportunity to change lives for the better. We all like to help others; it brings a great sense of satisfaction to guide an individual in their career path, or a company to that next level – placing the right person in the right job is a job well done.

Develop your interpersonal and professional skills
You are the vital link between the candidate and the client; you will need to have (and learn to enhance) a wide range of skills to succeed.  Most important is the ability to build professional relationships with your clients.

You need to be comfortable operating under pressure and should be ambitious and confident. It is also vital that you can multi-task and be able to apply a high level of integrity to your decision-making.

Personally and financially rewarding with superb career development opportunities
Recruitment consultants can be very well rewarded – and if you are good at your job - the performance related bonuses or commission levels are very attractive.

There is also excellent career progression in recruitment - if you’re new to the industry you would normally start as trainee consultant, progressing to a senior consultant and then depending on the company size, a branch manager or regional manager.

So for your next job, why not consider a career in helping other people find rewarding jobs and companies to flourish with ideal employees.  Interested? Why not work for Pinnacle Consulting...

The importance of confidence in the workplace: How to achieve a confident outlook and environment.

In the first part of this topic we looked at how confidence can benefit an individual or company to help them achieve success.  However, making this happen is a little more difficult, but there are five simple things that can help point you down the road of confidence Wenger has taken his Arsenal team down.

Part Two: Five ways to achieve this kind of environment

1. The attitude of the boss
It’s simple really, but if a boss listens, smiles and is helpful, as well as encouraging and praising their team, it can do wonders for everyone concerned.

People are given the environment where they have a voice that will be listened to and will not keep their ideas to themselves, fearing ridicule, but will be allowed to share their ideas and thrive.

2. Get the right balance between confidence and arrogance
This is important for an individual and a company. Arrogance can be off-putting for colleagues and customers and is not something that allows good teamwork or cooperation, in fact, it alienates others.

Someone who is truly confident has faith in their knowledge and ability and realises that they can support colleagues and help them grow, without fearing they are making their own position vulnerable. They are also honest enough to ask for support themselves and listen to others’ opinions – a great sign of someone who is confident. This creates a pleasant but challenging environment, where everyone becomes more confident.

3. Focus on the positives, rather than dwell on the negatives
A boss should avoid creating a negative environment either about the company or on aspects of people’s jobs. If there is too much of this, people will not believe they can succeed. Those in charge should make a point of communicating success stories to their team.

A team needs support and encouragement to inspire them to achieve more. In business this could mean greater sales, resulting in more commission or promotion and in football this could mean more silverware or an improved contract. Remember the words of Alex Ferguson in our original article on longevity in a job:  “For a player - and for any human being - there is nothing better than hearing ‘well done’. Those are the two best words ever invented in sports. You don’t need to use superlatives.”

4. Find a catalyst to change the atmosphere of the workplace
You can’t start a fire without a spark and sometimes you need to do something to inspire and change people’s mindset. Arsenal did this with the purchase of Mesut Özil, as it sent out a positive message to their supporters, the other players, and their competitors – the other clubs.

This is something that can be done as a company, as a team or as an individual. It is possible through one action to totally change the atmosphere in a very short period of time.

5. Make people feel like they can succeed and get promoted
Self-confidence is very important and is a key component of a successful person who wants to grow and advance their career. Projecting confidence in the workplace may be the difference between success and failure.

However, those in charge need to ensure these people stay with the company and know their aspirations can be fulfilled. If this is the case, they will work harder and give more to the company. As a boss it is vital to show strength and command respect from your team and colleagues. If members of your team develop and succeed it will mean you and your company will too. You will also maximise your team’s potential and your colleagues will respond accordingly and up their game.

Creating confidence and a positive air is hard to put your finger on - it’s almost not real, but can make or break bigger entities than an individual or company, it can do damage to a whole country and its economy.

There is great confidence in the building and construction industry at the moment, but what has really changed that feeling? Perhaps, people have finally got fed up with the negative news and decided to be positive and focus on the good. It could be that simple. Try it in your job or company. It is working for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal (so far!).

If you are looking for confident building product sector sales and marketing professionals to help grow your business, or have the confidence to take that next step in your career development, then contact us to discuss your options.

The importance of confidence in the workplace: Benefits of a positive and confident outlook

Wenger's Arsenal team has learnt the
importance of confidence
Earlier this year we looked at the skills needed to ensure longevity in a job with the same employer; we contrasted the success and failures of two legendary football managers, Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger. At that time it seemed Wenger had lost the ability to stay at the top and did not know how to turn things around. Jump forward a few months and it’s very different: as Ferguson is enjoying his retirement, Wenger’s Arsenal team is riding high at top of the Premier League. What has changed?

On the face it of it, very little has changed, but there is currently a positive and confident outlook running throughout Arsenal Football Club and its supporters. Those two factors are having a dramatic effect on the club’s fortunes and everyone is performing at a much higher level.

This demonstrates how our personal outlook and the general environment in which we work can inspire and help us reach our true potential, especially when we are part of a team. The alternative - and it is a fine line between the two - is a negative environment with ponderous decision-making and missed opportunities.

So what are the benefits of confidence and having a positive outlook, and how can we integrate them into our jobs, teams and companies? We look at this over two parts.

Part One: Five benefits of an organisation with a positive and confident outlook

1. People act on instinct and seize opportunity
People have faith in their own ability and are encouraged to act with natural instinct. It means you can set yourself apart from others and achieve heights that were previously unattainable. The bigger deals are there for the taking, if you put yourself in the position to be a contender.

Take a look at how the Arsenal team is now allowing their skills to do the talking, rather than thinking too hard about what they’re doing and allowing the opportunities for success to be missed.

2. To encourage proactive behaviour
Employees and companies no longer just react to situations, or believe what they want is not possible. Instead there is a proactive culture with the belief that goals can be achieved before the full-time whistle is blown and openings are closed for good.

When confidence is tangible people have belief, and if an objective suddenly seems a reality, rather than a dream, you work that much harder to ensure you achieve it.

Arsenal are currently looking forward to how they can develop; this is much better than just looking at what went wrong in the past – that is reactive and not a healthy environment for success.

3. Better decision-making
People make better decisions, which are not clouded with self-doubt or a negative outlook.

With Arsenal there is no longer an attitude of “What if I miss?” with players taking the safe option and therefore sometimes the wrong one. There is now the confidence to do what is right and not allow self-doubt to cloud decision-making.

4. Improved teamwork and atmosphere
If people work together as a happy team, rather than against each other, the team or company can move forward together, supporting and learning from each other. A happy team creates a positive atmosphere. If people look forward to going to work, their work ethic, attitude and ability to succeed is always going to be better.

Wenger’s team now has much improved teamwork and a fantastic work ethic and atmosphere and, as with Ferguson’s teams of the past at Manchester United, they believe that they can’t lose.

5. You attract success
Others view you as successful and react to your confidence, want to deal with you and be part of that environment. The law of attraction is very powerful and should not be underestimated. If customers want to deal with you and people want to work for you, then you are well on your way to success.

You only need to look at how demand for tickets at the Emirates has increased this season compared to last season and how, all of a sudden, top players from other clubs view playing for Arsenal as a viable alternative.

Part two: How to achieve this kind of environment.

If you are looking for confident building product sector sales and marketing professionals to help grow your business, or have the confidence to take that next step in your career development, then contact us to discuss your options.

Can we blame Kylie for the slow residential construction industry since 2003?

In November 2003 Kylie Minogue hit number one with a track called 'Slow' but little did she know how apt her choice of song title was. Ever since the diminutive one hit the top of the charts, residential construction has not reached such heights and the industry becoming 'slow' was something of an understatement. However, it has been revealed in the latest survey of purchasing managers that we seem to be back to those heights.

The September survey also says that construction companies ended the third quarter of 2013 with a strong expansion of overall output levels and a further improvement in their new order books and that optimism across the industry is at its highest since April 2010. The positive news continues with employment numbers in construction on the rise for the fourth consecutive month according to September data, and the rate of job creation reached its fastest for just under six years.

Adjusted for seasonal influences, the headline Markit/CIPS UK Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) posted 58.9 in September, down only fractionally from a near six-year high of 59.1 during August. The index was above the neutral 50.0 value for the fifth month running and signalled a sharp expansion of overall construction output.

All three main areas of the construction sector posted higher levels of business activity in September. Residential construction was the strongest performing of these sub-sectors, with the latest rise in output, as stated, the fastest since November 2003. Commercial construction activity increased at the most marked pace since May 2012, while growth of civil engineering activity eased from August’s recent high.

Increased volumes of new work encouraged construction companies to take on more staff in September, thereby extending the current period of job creation to four months. The latest expansion of construction employment was also the best since December 2007.

Job creation was supported by a greater positive outlook for business activity for the year ahead. More than five times as many respondents expect a rise in output (51%) as those that anticipate a fall (9%). This pointed to the highest level of confidence since April 2010.

Increased construction output and rising levels of client spending led to greater purchasing activity in the sector during September. Higher levels of input buying have now been recorded for four months in a row. This again placed strain on suppliers’ capacity, with delivery times lengthening to the greatest degree since August 1997.

Markit senior economist Tim Moore, author of the report, said: “Construction is no longer the weakest link in the UK economy. The third quarter of 2013 ended with output growth riding high amid greater spending on infrastructure projects and resurgent house-building activity.

“The reversal in fortunes has spanned commercial, residential and public sector construction projects. Moreover, builders are confident that a tide of new tender opportunities will continue to lift the construction sector in the months ahead, supported by improved development funding conditions and better underlying economic conditions.

“September’s survey suggested that constructors are beginning to react with confidence to the more positive landscape for the sector, as job creation and input buying both rose at robust rates over the month.”

David Noble, chief executive at the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply, said: “The construction sector is firing on all cylinders. Growth in UK housebuilding hit heights not seen for 10 years in September, and was supported by a solid acceleration in business from commercial construction, whilst growth in civil engineering remains well above the long run average, rounding off the best quarter of growth in construction since Q2 2010. Confidence is now at its strongest in almost 3 and a half years building strong momentum going into the final quarter.

“Having been in the doldrums for so long, builders are using this renewal as a platform to invest, with employment seeing the most dramatic upturn in close to 6 years.

“Inevitably, purchasing levels have also increased, but the adverse effect of this is increased pressure on suppliers to meet growing levels of demand, to the extent that their performance deteriorated at the fastest rate for 16 years.

“These pressures, along with increased cost burdens have the potential to act as a brake on the sector, but should not overshadow the overwhelmingly positive picture for UK construction.”

Construction Products Association reveal Reasons to be Cheerful Parts 1 & 2!

In some of the most encouraging news seen in the industry for a long time - certainly in terms of its upbeat nature and assertive stance - the Construction Products Association’s latest State of Trade Survey indicates that sales of construction products continued to strengthen during the third quarter of 2013 and optimism is high for the coming months too. This news comes fresh after recent figures released by the Office for National Statistics showed a 'dramatic increase' in construction new orders. Reasons to be cheerful, indeed!

The State of Trade survey shows that private housing and infrastructure were still the key drivers behind growth but building product manufacturers clearly signalled that the rise in sales was more widespread than in Q2. This news is exactly what we have been hearing at Pinnacle Consulting from many of our clients, and is one of the reasons why we have seen a 'dramatic increase' on the number of new construction sales jobs on our books in the last few weeks.

Construction Products Association economist, Milja Keijonen commented: "The third quarter of 2013 saw sales significantly rise across the board. Exports supported the growth but even the domestic market showed signs of recovery. Heavy side products, commonly utilised early in construction projects, recorded widespread growth in sales both on an annual basis and quarter-on-quarter. Sales of light side products such as fittings and services also increased strongly after a broadly flat Q2.

"Looking ahead, product manufacturers are increasingly optimistic about Q4 sales growth and most are expecting higher sales over the next 12 months. The wider economic outlook has steadily become more positive, which should support recovery in construction and demand for building products. We note that employment for product manufacturers is still flat, though sentiment is increasingly positive.

"Altogether, the results highlight the improving state of the market; however, concerns do remain about the sustainability of the recovery with most manufacturers reporting that domestic demand could prove to be a future constraint."

Other key points include:
  • Half of heavy side firms reported sales growth of over 5% quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year.
  • Trading conditions among light side producers improved significantly and around 60% of companies, on balance, experienced a rise in sales from a year ago and quarter-on-quarter.
  • Expectations suggest that conditions are set to improve further over the next three months with 67% of heavy and 66% of light side companies, on balance, expecting sales to rise in Q4.
  • Exports continued to boost sales in Q3 with 27% of light and 25% of heavy side firms reporting a rise in exports quarter-on-quarter, on balance.
  • Cost inflation was widespread across the industry with energy and transport costs driving higher unit costs.
All this comes on the back of recent data from the Office for National Statistics highlighting a dramatic increase in construction new orders during the second quarter of 2013. Overall, new orders in the four quarters to Q2 were 12.0% higher than a year earlier, worth £5 billion, with double-digit growth in almost every sector.

Commenting on the ONS figures, Dr Noble Francis, Economics Director at the Construction Products Association said; "Although construction output grew in the second quarter of 2013, this was purely driven by housing, which in turn has been boosted considerably by Help to Buy. However, the latest figures on new orders show that the £111 billion construction industry is ready to enjoy a sustained recovery over the next two years.

"A rise in house building has been augmented by increases in major infrastructure and a return to growth in schools and hospitals construction. Infrastructure new orders in the four quarters to Q2 were 19.8% higher than a year earlier and new orders for public non-housing, which primarily covers schools and hospitals, grew 12.6% over the same period."

"New orders in private commercial, the largest construction sector worth £21 billion each year, fell 4.9% in the four quarters to Q2. However, new orders in the second quarter were higher than in the previous quarter and appear to have passed the nadir, suggesting growth in private commercial medium-term.

"Overall, there are strong positive signs of a sustained recovery in construction output, not just in housing but also in private and public construction sectors. Our forecasts anticipate that construction output will grow 12.2% by 2016 as these new orders feed through into activity on the ground, providing an additional £11.8 billion for the industry and the wider economy."
